Subtraction Statement Sums With Regrouping

In statement sum we are given a statement. We have to analyse the statement and then take appropriate action.

Following steps are required to solve the statement

1. Read the statement carefully

2. Find the values that are given

3. Find the quantity which is required

4. Then perform the process to reach the desired result.

Let us consider the following example;

Shopkeeper had 200 packets of chips. Out of these packets he sold 94. How many packets were left?

1. We will first analyse the statement

2. We will find the values that are given

In the question it is given that

Shopkeeper had 200 packets of chips. Out of these packets he sold 94.

So, Total number of packets of chips = 200

No. of packets sold = 94

3. We will find the quantity which is required

In the question it is asked that

How many packets were left?

To find number of packets left

We will perform subtraction as we are supposed to find the no. of packets left

200 - 94 = ?

We will perform the required operation

As we have to subtract 94 from 200 we will perform the following steps

Step 1: Subtract the ones first.

0 ones - 4 ones

As 0 is less than 4 so we will subtract the ones by regrouping.

But we have 0 tens so we will first regroup is using hundreds

1 hundreds 0 tens = 10 tens

Now we will regroup these 10 tens into 9 tens and 1 tens

So 1 tens 0 ones = 10 ones

100 ones - 4 ones = 6 ones.

Step 2: Subtract the tens

9 tens - 9 tens = 0 tens

Step 3 : Now subtract the hundreds

1 hundred - 0 hundred = 1 hundred

Hence the answer is 106 packets are left

Hence number of packets left are 106.
